Festival time in Murcia
The big fiesta season starts in Murcia at the end of August running through to mid September with 3 exciting festivals.
The Cante Flamenco starting Monday August 27th the Feria de Murcia, from Thursday August 30th until September 11th, and finally the International Folklore Festival commences on September 3rd provide more than two weeks of activities.
These events have ancient links to the Virgin of Fuensanta, patron of the city of Murcia. According to ancient legend, the Virgin created a water miracle in this region to irrigate the crops after the long hot summer, and was given the name Fuensanta - Holy Source.
Feria de Murcia
The fair will include a cattle market at Azacaya, bullfighting, concerts and cultural events at the FICA arena area and also the ‘Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos’ – Moors and Christians Fiestas as well as Food and Wine Fair - the famous ‘Huertos’ at the Malecón.
The Murcian people show great devotion to Fuensanta with thousands of pilgrims each year accompanying the Morenica in a huge procession on Sunday 9th September from its sanctuary to the Cathedral of Murcia to celebrate their festivities and fair in Murcia.
